An Etsy Story: Grace and Lace

Is it just me, or do you love this outfit?

I actually saved it to my desktop as a look I’ll be recreating this holiday season. I especially love those button down leg warmers — known as the “Miss Molly” from one of our Etsy Besties 2012 winners, Grace and Lace.  (All the model is missing is a warm mug of coffee cradled in her hands.)

But being an Etsy Bestie is just one of the many great things happening to Melissa Hinnant and her girl-friendly start-up.

Melissa, founder of Grace and Lace

Her “Lacey Lou” leg warmers were featured last week on the Today Show.

And this week, Melissa is celebrating the 1-year anniversary of her buzzworthy company. Talk about a lot of success in just one, short year.

Of course, as Melissa says in her tagline, it’s all “made with His grace and a little lace.”

Here’s the second of my 6-part interview series with our Etsy Besties 2012 winners with sweet Melissa.

Me: How did you get started sewing?

MH: I’ve always been a DIY kinda girl. I grew up with a mom that always made homemade play-dough, birthday cakes and sewed our dance costumes. So I learned to “sew a straight line” very early in age.

It wasn’t until spring of 2010 — when I was 5 months pregnant. I was at a routine checkup and I was told that I was in very premature labor and would deliver a baby in 24 hrs that wouldn’t survive. I was rushed into emergency surgery, and then there I was — laying horizontal in the hospital for the rest of my pregnancy. The days were L O N G — and since I couldn’t even sit up, I just had to do something with my hands! So I started with a vision to crochet this tiny baby girl a blanket. And thus started and spurred my desire to sew sew sew.

I lived in the hospital for 2 weeks, before doctors could no longer stop the labor. Our very tiny but oh-so-perfect baby girl was born, and the Lord took her strait to Heaven.

{It is out of this great tragedy that has come my greatest victory.}

Late last Fall I listed my first pair of women’s boot socks. In a matter of days I was overwhelmed with orders that I could not possibly fulfill on my own. Now I have a small team of friends and family that work out of our homes busy sewing and shipping our lacey goodness to you!

Me: What inspires you on a daily basis?

MH: I’m inspired by my desire to be able to work from home and raise my little girl.

Me: What’s your favorite product that you sell — and why?

MH: My Milly Lace boot socks – cause they have been a work in progress since May of this year! I’m really proud of how they have come out in their fabulous hand-dyed colors.

Me: What would you say to someone else who wanted to get started with Etsy?

MH: Just do it! Share your love and passion for what you do and nothing can stop you.

Me: Favorite dessert?

MH: Strawberry cheesecake.

Me: Favorite quote?

MH: ‘Two things a woman should always be – classy and fabulous.” – CoCo Chanel
